Loveland Primary School hosted a special parade and assembly in honor of Army Sergeant Chris Tobias, a 2006 Loveland High School graduate, who just finished a tour of duty in Afghanistan. The parade was held on Thursday, February 9, at 1p.m. Sergeant Tobias left the Loveland Safety Center in a convertible on loan by Kings Volkswagen along with a police escort. They made their way down Lebanon Road to Loveland Madeira where the entire student body of Loveland Primary School and Loveland Elementary School, dressed in red, white, and blue, were there to greet him. A special assembly followed the parade in the LPS gym. Loveland City Manager Tom Carroll recognized Sergeant Tobias and Sara Dreier, Deputy District Director for Congresswoman Jean Schmidt, read a special proclamation. Sergeant Tobias’ mother Mary is a media aide at the LPS campus.

“I am overwhelmed by this show of support,” Sgt. Tobias shared. The special recognition was a surprise for Sergeant Tobias.

Sgt. Tobias serves in the United States Army and was deployed to Afghanistan from January 7, 2011 – December 27, 2011. He was a member of a combat infantry mission serving with Special Forces in Afghanistan. Tobias is stationed at Fort Riley in Kansas. He reported for basic training on September 25, 2008 at Fort Benning in Georgia. At Fort Riley, he is a member of the 1-16th Infantry, 2nd Platoon, and the Bravo Company.

While at Loveland High School, Chris was a member of the Loveland football team and volleyball team. He received the “Most Spirited” award for his senior class.

The “Dear Middle School Me” video showcases Loveland High School students looking back to their middle school years and giving advice based on their experiences. It is the second video produced by our high school students as part of the district’s “My Voice, My Choice” campaign that was launched this school year to encourage students to find their voice and stand up for what is right.

Loveland City School District has entered into a partnership with Barnes and Noble to launch a pilot project for the district’s 7th grade class. Dr. John Marschhausen announced his initiative at the State of the School’s presentation held on January 17, 2012.

The district’s plan is to purchase 500 color eNooks for each 7th grade student and teacher at Loveland Middle School and prepare for the current 6th grade to participate next year. Students will receive their Nooks at two distribution events in February. Barnes and Noble will provide technical assistance and support for the project onsite and Loveland parents and students will have a retail option for support at any Barnes and Noble location. Part of the purchase for this pilot project is the protection plan with sufficient back-up devices if there are hardware issues. The Nooks will be school-owned devices managed through Barnes and Noble and Loveland Schools.

According to Loveland Superintendent, Dr. John Marschhausen, the Nook will serve as an electronic textbook, an E-reader, and an internet accessible device for each student. The browser on the Nook, as well as many of the Android Apps, will provide many different learning opportunities for the students.

As the Class of 2017 moves intoLovelandHigh School, the district will then begin the implementation of the digital phase in at the high school and follow a similar implementation plan.

The goal is to ultimately make the purchase of Nooks revenue neutral through fees and the cost savings by reducing other more traditional supplies. The purchase of the Nooks is being made through permanent improvement funds. These funds can be used for capital improvements as well as textbooks and learning devices.

“As we reduce our required supply lists, move reading books to the electronic devices, and shift from making paper copies to digital copies being sent to student emails we will save money to help offset the costs of these devices,” Marschhausen said.

For questions on the project, email Dr. Marschhausen, drjohn@lovelandschools.org.
