Tracey Power’s art students at Loveland Intermediate School recently competed in the Eyes on Art contest. The program was developed by FindMyEyeCare.com to educate schools, students, and parents on eye and vision health and the importance of regular eye examinations. Students were encouraged to create one-of-a-kind vision-related artwork to compete for prizes while their schools earn free supplies.

Mrs. Power was contacted by the sponsors of the contest, Diversified Opthalmics Inc. to pilot the contest for them. She introduced the project to her class and they were able to work on it during class time. All the pieces of art were displayed online at www.findmyeyecare.com. Anyone was able to vote on their favorite piece of art and the student with the most votes won. By participating, Mrs. Power received $500 to buy art supplies for her classroom. The sponsors of this program are Staples and PNC Bank.

Optometrists from Diversified Opthalmics, Dr. Mark Hagee and Dr. Palmer Cook, came to LIS to present Mrs. Power and the following students with their prizes:
First prize winner, Emily Hamm, $100 gift card
Second Prize, Ross Wiseman, $50 gift card
Third prize, Caroline Vanbuskirk, $25 gift card

The U.S. Department of Education named Loveland High School as one of its first Green Ribbon Schools. There were 78 schools in the nation selected for this distinction. Loveland High Schoolis one of only two Ohio schools honored. The announcement was made on Monday, April 23, by U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, White House Council on Environmental Quality Chair Nancy Sutley, and Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lisa Jackson.

Green Ribbon Schools were selected for exercising a comprehensive approach to creating “green” environments through reducing environmental impact, promoting health, and ensuring a high-quality environmental and outdoor education to prepare students with the 21st century skills and sustainability concepts needed in the growing global economy.

As a district, Loveland has continually looked for ways to reduce its energy usage. Lovelandimplemented an Energy Improvement Plan and obtained six million dollars of interest-free financing provided under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. This deal was the first of its kind to be completed in Ohio and the sixth in theU.S. The capital raised was used to provide energy-efficient upgrades to buildings which have reduced gas and electric usage by more than 30%.

One of the key “green” efforts at Loveland High School has been on recycling. Loveland High School’s recycling efforts have been led by Tracy Burge, who has been teaching environmental science at the high school for the past two years.

Ms. Burge’s students have been at the forefront of initiation and implementation in school recycling programs. Last year, students began a school-wide recycling and trash reduction program to reduce trash volume. As a result of their efforts, Loveland was awarded “Outstanding High School Recycling Program“ by Hamilton County Recycling and Solid Waste District. Through their efforts, the volume of trash generated in the cafeteria has gone from 60 to 22 bags a day. The reduction in trash has saved the district approximately $300 a month in trash removal costs. Ms. Burge says the trash volume will decrease even more because the cafeteria will begin a composting program in the fall. Students are looking toward the future to make the cafeteria a “zero waste” facility.

“I have a personal passion for the environment and reducing, recycling, and reusing, which fit perfectly into my environmental science curriculum,” Burge said. “Through my students’ efforts we have changed the culture of our school. I appreciate the support of Dr. Moorhead and staff to make our efforts a success.”

Students also participated in a cell phone recycling program called “Go Bananas” that was sponsored by Cincinnati Zoo. Loveland High School students recycled the third largest number of cell phones in the nation.
