MINI GRANT PROGRAM
Since 2001, the Foundation has offered mini grants to the faculty and administrators of the district. In October, applications are accepted for up to $500 each for creative projects which cannot be funded through regular channels of school finance. Selections are made on the innovative ideas of the teacher to create a superior learning environment and can be awarded for new equipment, supplies, outside speakers, conferences, seminars, or other expenses the teacher might incur to reach his/her stated goal. Total program spending for each year is between $3,500 and $4,000.
SCHOLARSHIPS
$8,500.00 in scholarship money was presented to seven high school graduating seniors at
the May 2009 Senior Awards Night Program. These scholarships are given to seniors to implement high education at an accredited university or college who, in addition to a strong academic background, have participated in a wide range of extracurricular activities and community service projects, and have shown a strong work ethic.
While the Foundation recognizes that a strong academic background is conducive to success in a higher education program, members of the Board of Trustees also recognize the needs of students attending two year college programs and technical schools. Therefore, students interested in furthering their education in any capacity beyond high school are encouraged to apply for the Smith/Shannon Scholarship and the Loveland Schools Foundation Member Endowed Scholarship where no particular major is specified. For all scholarships, when all criteria have been met and are equal, need is the determining factor.
NORTH STAR PROJECT: SMARTBOARDS AND AIRLINERS
At a recent Foundation board meeting, members voted to make the purchase of SMARTBoards and Airliners for the six buildings in the Loveland City School District, its primary objective in the upcoming months.
SMARTBoards and AIRLINERS are interactive classroom teaching tools that make it possible for teachers to create rich, dynamic lessons which can enhance instruction and learning by addressing specific student skills.
SMARTBoards work particularly well in the lower grades (preschool through grade 4). The touch-sensitive display connects to a computer and LCD projector to show the computer image. An individual can control computer applications directly from the display, write notes in digital ink, and save the work to share later
The AIRLINER Wireless Slate enables the teacher to teach from anywhere in the classroom and allows students to interact with information from their desks. Multiple wireless slate users can write at the same time. A battery-free tethered pen lets the user control application, write notes, and highlight information in digital ink. Airliners are best suited for grades 5-12.
ENDOWMENT FUND
Thanks to two very generous contributions, the Foundation has been able to fulfill a long-time goal, the establishment of the Endowment Fund. Interest generated from this account will ensure a legacy to support projects for the Loveland City School District for future generations
